Tatsuke is a traditional work garment that has been passed down for generations in Itoshiro.

In this video, based on "How to Make Tatsuke", you can watch nearly every step from cutting to sewing. (While it’s filmed using a sewing machine, the techniques can also be applied to hand sewing.)

You can learn the hand movements, sewing order, and subtle tips that are hard to grasp just from a book, as if you were joining an actual workshop.

About This Video

This video was created based on the content I actually teach in workshops.

This is not a beautifully edited short lesson video; instead, we recorded every step without skipping as much as possible, so you can clearly see the hand movements and sewing order.

For that reason, we kept editing to the bare minimum, prioritizing the atmosphere of being right there next to someone making the garment together.

If you don’t understand something, pause and rewind as many times as you need, and work at your own pace.

Difficulty Level:

Tatsuke is the signature garment of Ishidetsu Shoten, but it is not a project for beginners. Tatsuke actually has a very "clever" design, which comes with a corresponding level of difficulty. While some beginners do try it, we recommend it for those who are somewhat familiar with sewing.(For beginners, we recommend starting by making a Hakama. Please refer here for details on clothing difficulty levels)

It will take time to complete, but the joy of finishing each garment will be that much more rewarding as a result.

About the Video Production

I do not intend to teach the "only correct way" to sew. As noted at the start of the text, "There is no single correct way to make Tatsuke."

I learned garment making as passed down at Ishidetsu Shoten, and over 15 years of continuous making, I am sharing the machine sewing methods I personally use.

Additionally, this video was made prioritizing "being able to actually make a complete garment" over pursuing perfection as a video production.

There may be parts that are not perfectly easy to watch or edited, but our hope is that it will serve as a simple, practical teaching tool that feels like sitting next to someone in a workshop, making the garment together.

Fabric Used

In our workshops, we use unbleached linen fabric. This fabric is woven in Shiga Prefecture, is extremely high quality, and very easy to sew.

We cut it to a 38cm width and overlocked the selvedges, so you can skip the cutting step. You can purchase this fabric as an add-on option, so please feel free to use it.

Workshops Are Also Ongoing

Several times a year,we host a 2-night, 3-day workshop for making Tatsuke at Ishidetsu Shoten. While the video only covers the making instructions, at Ishidetsu Shoten we also offer visits to local shrines and explanations about old linen Tatsuke garments.

Additionally, in various regions,classes taught by Tatsuke Workshop Certified Instructorsare being held. Please also take advantage of these in-person learning opportunities.

Finally

Tatsuke is not a garment that can be completed in a single day.

I believe that the charm of this garment lies in the time spent sewing little by little, tailoring one complete garment with your own two hands.
