【Registration opens from 5/1】
For those who want to host a Tatsuke workshop
We’ll clearly explain how to make it and how to communicate it.
Your fellow certified instructors are waiting for you.

“With craftsmanship this wonderful, I want to share it with others.”
Straight-line cutting, a clever construction that produces no fabric waste, and the traditional wisdom of the Japanese people. With more and more people wanting to share these qualities, we launched a course in 2023 to train and certify workshop instructors.
I'll tell you how to communicate it.
This course is not intended to teach you how to make tatsuke.
Why is it this shape?
Why is this step necessary?
Clothing born from everyday life and passed down through generations,
Understand the structure and background as a whole, and digest it within yourself,
This is a course for putting things into words and handing them to others.
What you yourself are satisfied with,
I want to convey it politely and sincerely.
For those who feel that way
Certified Tatsuke Workshop Instructor CourseIt is.

This course is ideal for those who feel the following way.
-
Make one or more tatsuke,
I can make it now.For those who want to know what lies beyond - Why this shape, and why this process,
For those who want to understand it in their own way and put it into words - If you're holding a workshop,
For those who want to convey not only the steps, but also the background and way of thinking - To questions from participants,
For those who want to be able to answer not just from experience, but with clear reasons - What you yourself are convinced of,
For those who want to hand it over to someone with care and sincerity

What We Value in This Course
In this course, we value not only teaching techniques and procedures, but also what to communicate and the mindset with which to do so.
Understanding the reasons behind the form
The shape and construction of tatsuke reflect local ways of life and the wisdom cultivated over a long span of time. In this course, rather than ending with “this is how you do it,” we will think together about why it has this shape and why these steps are necessary. By understanding the reasons behind them, tatsuke becomes more than just something you make—it becomes a garment you can speak about.

2. Be able to explain it in your own words
To become a certified instructor, what’s required is not memorizing a set script. It’s being able to understand something yourself, truly be convinced by it, and communicate it in your own words in a way that suits the other person. That’s why, in this course, we value not only making things, but also taking the time to think and put things into words.
3. Communicate sincerely
The workshop is a place where people engage with one another and share time together. In this course, we value not only accuracy but also communicating with sincerity. Rather than leaving uncertainties vague, we believe it is important to pause, think, and, when necessary, be able to say, "I don't know." We believe that this attitude is what builds trust in a learning environment.
What you'll learn in this course
This course is designed on the premise that you will learn to make tatsuke, and from there, it will cultivate your ability to understand and communicate what lies beyond that.
- Treating the structure of tatsuke not as a process, but as a meaningful form
- Being able to explain why these dimensions were chosen and why it is sewn this way
- The characteristics of hand sewing and machine sewing, and the differences in how to teach each
- How to approach and think about frequently asked questions in workshops
- Adjust your wording to match the participants’ level of understanding
Think as you make, and put those thoughts into words. By valuing this back-and-forth process, you can truly internalize tatsuke as “knowledge you can teach.” We also hope you will learn about the region of Itoshiro, where tatsuke was born.

The Process to Become a Certified Instructor
The course progresses step by step.
Rather than completing it all at once, this structure is designed to deepen understanding over time.

- Certified Instructor Gathering: Once a year, we gather in Itoshiro and offer consultation sessions on topics such as hosting courses, along with plans to enjoy Itoshiro in every season.
- As part of our production-area study sessions, we create opportunities for makers to learn about yarn and fabric. They also provide learning experiences such as factory tours that are not usually accessible.
- LINE group: You will join a place where you can consult with each other about making tatsuke.
- Collaborative workshop promotion: Through Ishitesshiro Clothing Store’s various communication channels, we will help promote workshops held by certified instructors.
Comments from past participants
From people who actually took the course, we’ve received feedback like the following.
-
Having people gathered who aspire to become certified instructors, and being able to participate with a shared sense of unity in learning tatsuke, made it an extremely meaningful time.Finding companions we could learn and grow with has been a huge support in helping spread tatsuke.
-
After the first workshop, there were parts I didn’t understand, but this time I was able to join the certification course, and thanks to the careful explanations, I was able to understand. Making tatsuke is really profound. It makes me want to keep making more and more. I’m growing to love it even more.
-
It was during the deep snowy season in Itoshiro, but the scenery was soothing, and the other participants were friendly, so I was able to enjoy chatting while making tatsuke.
-
I was able to learn not only the technical aspects of how to make things and how to teach them, but also experienced everyone’s hospitality during my stay, got to see and learn about Itoshiro, and had the chance to meet everyone who participated alongside me—all of it was truly a wonderful time.
A defining feature of this course is that many people say it changed not only their skills, but also their mindset and attitude, and that they found like-minded peers.

Frequently Asked Questions (Q&A)
Q1. If you have made tatsuke before, how much experience is required?
If you have experience completing it through Tatsuke at least once, you are welcome to participate.
I value the desire to understand why something happens more than whether you're good or bad at it.
Which will be taught, sewing machines or hand sewing?
In the course, both machine sewing and hand sewing are covered.
In the workshop, we will also explain the features of each option and how to present them, so you can choose according to the participants and environment.
Can I participate even if I have no teaching experience?
Yes, it is possible.
This course is designed not so much for those who already have teaching experience, but rather for those who are thinking, "I want to start teaching from now on."
Q4. After certification, is it mandatory to hold workshops?
No, it is not necessarily required to hold one.
Some people also participate with the aim of deepening their own learning.
It's perfectly fine if you make use of it in your own timing and in your own way.
