“Karusan” is a tapered pant with a silhouette that sits between Tatsuke and Hakama. One handmade garment created by an elderly woman born in the Meiji era in Itoshirakawa still exists today; its original design was both practical and stylish, so we have created a modern, reimagined iteration of this piece.

This time, we will complete Karusan over a 3-day, 2-night period.

9:00 AM: Shrine Visit, Tour of the Antique Materials Museum
10:00 AM: Stitching Time (At the Clothing Boutique)

* Evenings are mostly free time. Recommended activities include a visit to the nearby open-air hot spring (Manten no Yu) and stargazing.

What to Bring

Sewing Supplies (Fabric Shears, Thread Snips, Tape Measure, Chalk Pen, Sewing Thread Matching Your Fabric if you bring your own, 10 straight pins, Pin Cushion), Fabric (We’ll provide fabric if you don’t bring your own.), Overnight Kit (Towels, Toothbrush, Pajamas, etc.)

* Please bring medium-weight linen, cotton, cotton-linen blend fabric, or similar.
* We’ll provide sewing machines (JUKI industrial sewing machines and sergers) and a 50-60cm ruler.
* We’ll provide serger thread in white, beige, navy blue, and black.
* Waist Elastic (1cm width / 2cm width), Waist Ties (1cm width)We can provide these for you. Please bring your preferred width if you have a specific size in mind.
* We’ve linked the fabrics we provide on the site below. Please reference this when planning your project. (If you purchase fabric through us, we’ll also provide matching sewing thread.)

Participation Fee

37,000JPY(Lunch is included. Please pay approximately 10,000 JPY per night for accommodation (includes breakfast and dinner) directly on-site.)

* Depending on your experience level, you may not finish your project within the workshop timeframe. In that case, you may finish it at home.
* Please contact us if you wish to bring your own sewing machine.
* Accommodations: There are very few accommodations operating within the village, so we primarily recommend the guesthouse KIITOS run by the Ishizderehaku Clothing Boutique.
* Please contact us if you wish to stay an extra night before or after the workshop.

Accommodation Details

We’ll provide accommodations at the guesthouse "KIITOS," located directly across from the Ishizderehaku Clothing Boutique workshop space (separate fee). Due to limited availability, we will primarily assign shared rooms (2 people per room).
We’ll send detailed instructions and a pre-workshop survey approximately one month before the event. If you plan to stay at a different accommodation or specifically request a private room, please let us know in advance.

FAQ About Participation

Q1. I’m a complete beginner at clothing making—can I still join?

A. Yes! Many beginners have joined our workshops in the past.

This Karusan pattern uses only straight cuts, so
cutting and sewing are done only right before each step.

In this workshop, we’ll walk you through:
• How to take accurate measurements
• How to handle and cut fabric
• Sewing sequence
• How to finish seam allowances
one step at a time with detailed instruction.

Rather than focusing on making a perfect finished product,
we prioritize experiencing traditional Japanese clothing-making techniques.
Please join regardless of your prior experience level.

Q2. I’m clumsy—will I be able to finish my project by the end of the workshop?

A. We’ll provide full support to help you finish your project, so please don’t worry.

Our small class sizes let us tailor support to each participant’s pace.
Feel free to ask questions as many times as you need in the moment.

This workshop is not about achieving a perfect finished garment.
We prioritize getting hands-on with sewing and creating a garment that feels uniquely yours.

Q3. I’m worried I won’t keep up with the physical pace.

A. We’ll work at a comfortable, sustainable pace.

While this is a 2-night, 3-day workshop, we prioritize balancing sewing time with breaks.
You won’t be standing or sewing nonstop the entire time.

We’ll alternate between focused sewing time, time to learn about local culture,
and casual tea breaks throughout the workshop.

Q4. Who typically joins your workshops?

A. Participants come from all age groups and walks of life.

Past participants include:
• People who love sewing (especially those who feel conflicted about fabric scraps!)
• People interested in Japanese daily life and culture
• People who want to spend hands-on time in nature
and many other kinds of people.

Even among first-time meeting each other,
sharing the experience of making the same garment
naturally fosters conversation and connection.

Q5. Ishizderehaku is quite far, but is it okay to join alone?

A. Most participants join alone, so there’s no need to worry.

This workshop often draws participants from far away who join alone.
We’ll send detailed instructions for accommodations and transportation ahead of time, so you can plan with peace of mind.

We’ve worked hard to create a welcoming environment where you’ll feel that way too.

Q6. What do I need to bring?

A. We’ll provide large sewing supplies like sewing machines and irons.

so please don’t stress and just come enjoy the workshop!

Q7. What kind of garment will I make?

A. You’ll make one custom Karusan garment tailored to your measurements.

If you’re feeling curious but nervous,
please come to Ishizderehaku and join us anyway.

This workshop focuses less on whether you "can" make a garment and more on
getting hands-on, enjoying the experience, and taking home a meaningful creationthat you made yourself.

Important Notes

• There are no convenience stores or supermarkets nearby. Please bring any items you’ll need for your 2-night stay, including snacks (we’ll provide some snacks too, but feel free to bring your favorites).
• Daytime temperatures will rise above 30°C, but mornings and evenings can feel cool. Please bring a lightweight long-sleeve shirt for extra warmth.
