We’ve created a booklet explaining how to make a mojiri sleeve haori jacket.

This haori is made using only straight cuts, with a distinctive sleeve shape. This sleeve style appears in Ainu clothing, and is also a design found on old indigo-dyed folk garments preserved in Ishidera.
(A linen mojiri sleeve happi made during the Meiji era)
We based this booklet on the garment shown above.

We created this booklet because we want more people to make the mojiri sleeve garments traditionally crafted in the mountain village of Ishidera, Gifu Prefecture.
The contents include:
• A single handed-down garment
• How to make a mojiri sleeve haori
• Taking measurements
• How to take measurements
• Cutting fabric
• Sewing and cutting
• Advanced techniques
• Children’s mojiri sleeve haori
• Key tips for cutting fabric to kimono width
• Preserving and passing on this craft
That’s everything included.
We hope you’ll pick up a copy for yourself.

◾️ Hashtags for when you share garments you made using these tutorials
We received a request from customers asking us to create hashtags so people can see garments made by others. When you share photos of your makes on social media, please include these hashtags along with your photos:
#itoshiromojirisleeve
please tag your posts with these. For garments other than mojiri sleeve styles:
#itoshirotatsuke
#itoshirohakama
#itoshiroechizenshirt
#itoshironosleeve
#itoshirokarusan
please include these tags. That way, when you search for the hashtags, you’ll be able to see garments made by other makers.
■ Production Story
Many people are surprised that we are publicly sharing detailed instructions for the garments we primarily produce and sell as Ishidera Clothing Store. We decided to share these tutorials because we want more people to learn about the beauty of tatsuke.
Originally, we learned these skills from the local elder women in our community, who shared their knowledge generously. We want to pass this knowledge on to more people, and share the surprise and joy of making these garments, as well as the pleasure of wearing clothing you made yourself.
We also host irregular workshops based on this booklet, so we hope we can share the joy of crafting together with you.
