How to make a sleeveless top [Itoshiro Folk Clothing Series]

We have created a booklet explaining how to make the "Sodenashi" (sleeveless garment) that we will be releasing this autumn.

This is the fourth in our series of pattern-making guides, following the "Tatsuke," "Hakama," and "Echizen Shirt." Like the others, this garment is made solely from straight cuts and is a vest-style piece of clothing without sleeves. It has been adapted for modern wear, so the back neckline has a slight curve.

Among our traditional clothing series, this one has the fewest parts and the simplest construction, making it the easiest in terms of difficulty. However, the cutting process is key and holds some surprises.

This design can be used as a stylish garment in spring and summer with thin fabric, or to keep your back warm in autumn and winter with warmer fabric. It can also be worn for both formal and casual occasions, so please try experimenting with various fabrics.

＊Advice

・Suitable fabrics: Since the shoulder width is adjusted with tucks, softer fabrics that drape well will result in a more comfortable fit than stiff fabrics. (The required fabric length is stated in the instructions.)
・Hand sewing or machine sewing: Either is possible. The pattern is designed so that it can be sewn entirely by hand, even without a serger.
・It is also possible to make a long version by arranging the design.

＊Please note that in some regions, this style was used as protective winter clothing with cotton padding (such use was also seen in Itoshiro), but this pattern is not for winter clothing, but rather based on the "sodenashi" used as a stylish garment.

Many people are surprised that we, Itoshiro Clothing Store, meticulously publish the patterns for the clothes we primarily produce and sell. We decided to share the patterns because we want more people to know about the wonderful traditional clothing of Itoshiro.
