We created this by adapting an old sleeveless vest-style garment. The unique shoulder design, where the right and left sides differ to avoid fabric waste, shows the wisdom of our ancestors. This time, we extended the length of the sleeveless piece to make a vest-dress.

It’s a gentle fabric, so even those who dislike wool can wear it. This is especially recommended for people who previously thought they didn’t like wool.

Natural-colored sheep

This brown is the natural color of wool. It’s a fabric developed using wool from the rare 'Black Merino' sheep breed, which has a small global population. As it’s a natural color, it has a soft vibe that pairs well with anything.

[Background Story]

The 'sleeveless' that inspired this garment was once handmade by grandmothers. It served two main purposes: one was 'cold protection' – they’d put cotton in the back to keep warm. The other was 'formal wear' – wearing a 'sleeveless' over a work happi was considered formal attire. This is a photo of it being used as formal wear.

As cold-weather workwear, people wore it while working. A woman wearing a hooded head covering is shown wearing a sleeveless garment that reaches her hips.

While speaking with the elderly in Ishitobetsu, we aim to carry on the traditions that have continued here and create clothing that passes them to the next era in a better form.

The 'sleeveless' is exactly one such tradition. We hope as many people as possible can incorporate this wonderful, waste-free garment made with straight cuts into their daily lives.
