We adapted old sleeveless vest designs to create this piece. To avoid wasting fabric, the left and right shoulder designs differ — this showcases the wisdom of past generations. This time, we lengthened the sleeveless style to make a vest dress.

It’s ideal to layer over shirts or dresses in cold weather, and its length pairs well with pants too.

The sturdy fabric means it won’t look out of place at formal events. It’s useful both for staying warm and as an everyday outerwear item.

This is made with black merino wool, and we also carry it in brown and gray options. It’s 100% wool fabric that’s slightly thinner and softer than the charcoal version.

[Background Story]

The "sleeveless" style this piece is based on was once handmade by grandmothers, with two main purposes: 1) Warmth — they stuffed cotton into the back to keep warm. 2) Formal wear — wearing a sleeveless over a work-style happi coat was considered formal attire. This is a photo of one used as formal wear.

As workwear for cold weather, these were worn during tasks — the woman in the photo (wearing a face covering) has a sleeveless that reaches her hips.

While speaking with elderly residents of Itoshiro, we aim to carry on these long-standing traditions and create clothing that can be passed down to future generations in a better way.

The "sleeveless" is exactly one such tradition. We hope many people will add this wonderful, waste-free straight-cut clothing to their daily lives.
