This is a remake of an old-style sleeveless vest. The unique way the right and left shoulders are constructed, to avoid wasting fabric, is a testament to the wisdom of our ancestors. This time, we extended the length of the sleeveless garment to create a vest-dress.

We have this in black merino wool, plus brown and gray versions as well. It’s a 100% wool fabric that’s slightly lighter and softer than charcoal.

【Background Story】

The 'sleeveless' design that inspired this piece was once made by grandmothers themselves. It had two uses: one was 'warmth' — they’d insert cotton into the back to stay warm. The other was 'formal wear' — wearing a sleeveless over a work happi was considered formal attire. This is a photo of it being used as formal wear.

As cold-weather work wear, it seems people wore it while working. This shows a woman wearing a sleeveless garment that reaches her hips, with a hood.

While speaking with elderly people in Itoshiro, we aim to carry on these traditional techniques passed down here and create clothing that we can pass on to the next generation in a better way.

The 'sleeveless' is exactly one of those designs. We hope many people will incorporate this wonderful, waste-free clothing made with straight cuts into their daily lives.
