A stylish shirt made possible by straight-line cutting
Come spend 2 nights and 3 days in Itoshiro and finish it while enjoying the process stitch by stitch.
Eligible: Beginners to experienced makers
Difficulty: ★★★☆☆
Method: Hand-sewnorSewing machine

A design that makes people say, “It’s straight-line cutting?!”
This is the first workshop ever for the three-piece-sleeve shirt.

A popular design and silhouette
An open-collar shirt made using only straight lines. Its ingenious construction makes it enjoyable even for experienced makers.

A sleeve with a striking hakama-like feel.
In fact, this sleeve is based on the bottom garment called “hakama.” The real charm is learning, while making it, how people in the past created things this way with flexibility and ingenuity.

Loop-making is fun too

Q&A about participation
Q1. I’m a beginner at making clothes. Can I join?
A. Yes, beginners have participated before.
The three-piece-sleeve shirt is made with straight-line cutting,
so both cutting and sewing are mostly straight lines.
In this course,
・How to determine measurements
・How to handle fabric and cut it
・The sewing order
・How to finish seam allowances
we explain each step carefully, one by one.
Rather than focusing on “making it perfectly,”
we value “experiencing the way Japanese clothing is made,”
so please join regardless of your experience level.
Q2. I’m clumsy and worried I won’t be able to finish it.
A. We’ll support you thoroughly until it’s completed, so don’t worry.
This is a small-group course, and we move along while checking each person’s progress.
If you don’t understand something, please ask as many times as needed on the spot.
Also, this is not a course aimed at achieving a “perfect finish.”
We value using your hands and shaping a garment that is your own.
Q3. I’m worried I may not have the stamina to keep up.
A. We’ll proceed at a pace that doesn’t overdo it.
It’s 2 nights and 3 days, but we value balancing work time and breaks.
There is no need to stand or sew nonstop.
We move back and forth between “focused hands-on time,” “learning about local culture,”
and “tea breaks” as we go.
Q4. What kind of people participate?
A. People of all ages and backgrounds take part.
So far, participants have included
・People who love making clothes (and feel conflicted when scraps are left over!)
・People interested in Japanese daily life and culture
・People who want to spend time working with their hands in nature
and many others.
Even when people are meeting for the first time,
sharing time making the same thing together
naturally creates conversation.
Please join us looking forward to making new friends!
Q5. Itoshiro is far away. Is it okay to come alone?
A. It’s fine—most participants come alone.
This course is attended by many people coming from far away and many solo participants.
We will also give you advance guidance on accommodation and transportation, so please rest easy.
Nearly 100% of participants say, “I’m glad I came because it was so far.”
We have arranged our reception system so that you can feel that way too.
Q6. What do I need to bring?
A. We provide the large tools needed for sewing, such as sewing machines and irons.
Details of what to bring are listed at the top of this page, so please check there.
If there are items that are difficult to obtain or carry, we can provide them too,
so please come without worry.
Q7. What kind of garment will I finish?
A. You will make one kalsan, tailored to your own body.
“I’m interested, but I’m also a little nervous”
Please come to Itoshiro with those feelings as well.
This course is about more than whether you can or can’t do it,
it’s about using your hands, feeling it, and taking it homethat we value.
Notes
・There are no convenience stores or supermarkets nearby. Please bring what you need for 2 nights and 3 days, including snacks (we will provide some as well).
・During the day, if the weather is nice, temperatures can rise above 30 degrees, but in the morning, evening, or when it rains, it can feel chilly. It’s reassuring to bring a lightweight long-sleeve top for warmth.
Cancellation Policy
・Cancellation from after application until 1 week before the event date: 5%
・Cancellation from 6 days before to 3 days before the event date: 50%
・Cancellation after that: full amount
