This workshop is intended for the following types of people:

This online workshop isNOT a course for complete beginners to sewing.

- People who have made clothes using sewing books or their own self-taught methods
- You follow patterns but sometimes run into issues you can’t figure out how to fix

For people like this,Make clothes while understanding fabric, construction, and tailoringthis is the workshop for you.Join from home while connected virtually to make a perfectly fitted Hakama made just for your measurements. You can participate using your preferred method, whether sewing by hand or using a sewing machine.

Hakama are pants made entirely with straight cuts. Their wide silhouette makes them comfortable to wear and easy to style.

You can also make a straight design by omitting the gusset at the hem.

For straight cuts, we add a gusset at the crotch to increase range of motion.

Enjoy making bottoms that eliminate fabric waste, based on Japanese sewing techniques.

About Fabric

You can either prepare your own fabric, or purchase fabric from our shop alongside your workshop registration.

Unbleached Linen: Recommended for all seasons except mid-winter. This is solid plain-weave linen in its natural color, with a relaxed, organic vibe. Woven in Shiga Prefecture (100% Linen)

  • This workshop includes homework assignments. Please note that you will need to complete homework between sessions to stay caught up, and join accordingly.

【Additional Materials You Will Need】

• Fabric for your project (you can bring your own preferred fabric, or purchase optional fabric through this site.)

【Required Supplies (Please Prepare These Yourself)】

• Sewing thread matching your fabric
• Waist elastic (cut to your own waist measurement)
• Waist tie (only if needed; approx. 140-170cm)

【Tools Required for Your Project】

• For both hand sewing and machine sewing: Sewing supplies (fabric shears, thread snips, measuring tape, chalk pen, 20 pattern weights, pin cushion),   iron, ironing board, and elastic threader
• Hand sewing only: Hand sewing needles
• Machine sewing only: Sewing machine, serger (if you don’t have one, use the zigzag function, or fold and sew the raw edges to finish them)

【Participation Process】

• After you apply, we will send you a participation survey via Google Forms within two weeks. (We will send this via email, so please make sure to whitelist emails from ws@itoshiro.org to avoid them going to your spam folder.) If you do not receive the survey after two weeks, please contact us at ws@itoshiro.org.
• Based on your participation survey, we will host the workshop starting October 1. Please prepare your sewing supplies, fabric, and the instructional book before joining the workshop.
• We will host the workshop using Google Meet (no app download required). We will send you the joining link before the session starts, please access the meeting through that link.
• If you are unable to attend any sessions, we will send you a recording, but please try to join all 3 sessions to complete your Hakama.
• Depending on your skill level, some participants may not finish their project during the workshop.

【Pre-Workshop Preparation】

Pre-wash your fabric before starting. Submerge it in water, lightly wring it out, and hang it to dry. Press it with a low-heat iron using a pressing cloth.
* If you normally machine wash your fabrics, place them in a laundry bag and run them on a gentle cycle. Press out wrinkles with an iron. Fabric will shrink, but pre-washing before sewing will prevent unexpected shrinkage later on.

Based in Gifu City, Gifu Prefecture, I run folk clothing production and workshops at Ishidarezumi Western Goods Store. I will guide you through the process while sharing tips for sewing well and key points for beautiful tailoring. I want everyone to experience the joy of creating and enjoy a peaceful, fulfilling time. My motto is 'Praise and encourage growth!'

We will walk through the process while explaining 'why this shape?' and 'why this sewing method?',
this course is perfect for people who want to take their self-taught skills to the next level.

Can I learn effectively online?

During the session, I will show you my work up close while explaining each step and my thought process.

What happens if I miss a session?

If you are unable to attend a session for unavoidable reasons, we will send you a recording of the session later. We will also provide follow-up support to help you keep up with future sessions.

Can I join mid-workshop?

We strongly recommend joining from the first session. Each session builds on the previous one, so joining mid-workshop may make it difficult to follow along.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations from sign-up up to 1 week before the workshop: 5%
- Cancellations made 6 to 3 days before the workshop: 50% fee
- Cancellations made fewer than 3 days before the workshop: Full fee charged
