Limited to Tatsuke Certified Instructors
Hand-sewing workshop to learn how to craft a traditional tachuke work jacket
~Welcoming Shinobu Ozaki, a Japanese dressmaking specialist and certified instructor~
“I want to learn hand-sewing techniques,” “I want to host a hand-sewing workshop.”
More and more people want to make clothes entirely by hand, without using a sewing machine. There are always plenty of confusing points and unanswered questions around stitching techniques, sewing order, and the final durability of your garment, right?
For this session, exclusive to certified instructors, we will welcome kimono tailor Shinobu Ozaki to teach hand-sewing techniques.
That said, since tattsuke are agricultural work garments, their sewing method is not the same as that of kimono or yukata. However, having a working knowledge of Japanese dressmaking techniques is extremely important when holding hand-sewing workshops.
Anyone who is looking to run hand-sewing workshops going forward is warmly invited to join this event!
This will also serve as a rich learning space for fellow certified instructors, so we invite you to join us and look forward to welcoming you.
Things you can learn
・ Basic Japanese dressmaking stitching techniques (please bring a traditional sewing frame if you own one)
• Sew with graded seam allowances
・ Methods to improve durability through hand sewing techniques, such as adding reinforcing tack stitches
• How to sew flat-felled seams by hand
· Explanation of vintage hand-sewing tacking techniques
Advance preparation
This session will primarily focus on Tatsuke. Please finish cutting and pressing fabric for one full Tatsuke garment you intend to make ahead of time, so you are fully prepared to start sewing immediately. A 1.5cm seam allowance is assumed for this project.
Itoshiro Folk Dance Mini Workshop
We will also set aside time to teach the Itoshiro folk dance. Gujo is famous for its all-night Gujo Odori dance, but the Itoshiro region has preserved its own unique songs and dances exclusive to the area. The traditional costume worn for these performances is the Tatsuke. Let's start practicing now so we can all one day dance together while wearing our Tatsuke!
Winter preserved food: Nikuzuke (marinated cured meat)
For dinner, we are serving "nikuzuke" marinated meat, the beloved soul food of the Itoshiro region. This special dish is only available during this time of year! Come visit us to enjoy this one-of-a-kind traditional Itoshiro meal that pairs perfectly with both rice and drinks, making every bite more satisfying.
