We've fully utilized the "straight cutting" technique handed down by our predecessors. This allows us to create collar designs without wasting fabric.

The sleeve design, often seen in Ainu clothing, also appears in Itoshiro in a similar form, known as "mojiri-sode" (twisted sleeve) or "maki-sode" (rolled sleeve).

We hear that only 3% of the fabric made in Japan is currently used in the Japanese apparel market. We are actively committed to using domestically produced materials to preserve and pass on domestic weaving traditions.

Production Story

We made this with an old garment given to us by Risako, who was born in 1927, as our guide.

The distinctive feature is the sleeve, a "mojiri-sode" (twisted sleeve) made by folding and sewing a rectangle.

I still remember the shock of seeing this sleeve in person for the first time. I realized that a triangular-shaped sleeve could be made from just one piece of fabric, and that this sleeve had the same structure as those found in Ainu clothing.

Since Itoshiro is a settlement from the Jomon period, there might be some connection. This design was created while pondering the romance of long history.
