· They follow patterns but sometimes struggle to get good results and don't know why
· They always struggle to choose fabric

For people like this,create garments while understanding fabric, construction, and tailoringthis is the workshop for you.Join from your home while connected online to craft a perfectly sized Karusan made just for you. You can participate using your preferred method, whether hand-sewing or using a sewing machine.

Karusan is a pair of pants made entirely with straight cuts. It’s a tapered design that’s comfortable to wear and easy to coordinate with other pieces.

We’ve added a gusset at the crotch for straight-cut construction to increase range of motion.

Enjoy making bottoms that don’t waste fabric, based on Japanese sewing techniques.

Karusan comes in four sizes from size 0 to 3. (Updated with the 2nd edition pattern released 2025.12/1) Please make your preferred size.

About the Fabrics

You can either prepare your own fabric, or purchase fabric from our shop alongside this workshop.

① Unbleached Linen: Recommended for all seasons except mid-winter. This is solid plain-weave linen in its natural color, with a relaxed, natural vibe. Woven in Shiga Prefecture (100% Linen)

② Rescue Fabric Green / Dark Green: A cotton-linen blend fabric. It has structure and sheen, for a refined look. Perfect for machine sewing. (52% Cotton, 42% Linen)Dark Green is sold out

③ Sashiko-style Fabric: A popular dark navy fabric with character. Please note, however, that your hands may become stained blue while sewing. The fading will settle after roughly 3 washes. (100% Cotton)sold out

④Chambray-style Gray:A yarn-dyed weave of gray and black. It’s soft and fluffy. Suitable for all seasons except mid-summer. It’s casual but has a muted color palette, making it easy to coordinate with other pieces. (99% Cotton, 1% Polyurethane)sold out

【Additional Items You Will Need】

• Karusan Pattern (2nd Edition, released 2025.12.1): If you already own the 1st edition, we will send you a download link for the 2nd edition. If you do not already have the pattern, please purchase it as an option. (You will receive a discounted price if you purchase it alongside this workshop)
• Fabric for your project (You can prepare your own preferred fabric, or purchase it as an option through this site)

【Required Supplies (Please Prepare These Yourself)】

• Sewing thread matching your fabric
• Waist elastic (cut to your own waist measurement)
• Waist tie (only for those who want one; approx. 140-170cm)

【Tools You Will Need to Make the Pants】

• For both hand sewing and machine sewing: Sewing supplies (fabric scissors, thread snips, measuring tape, chalk pen, 20 sewing pins, pin cushion),   iron, ironing board, and threader
• Hand sewing only: Hand sewing needles
• Machine sewing only: Sewing machine, serger (if you don’t have one, use the zigzag stitch function instead, or fold and stitch the raw edges to finish them)

【Participation Process】

• After you submit your application, we will send you a participation survey via Google Form within 2 weeks. (We will send this via email, so please make sure to whitelist emails from ws@itoshiro.org to ensure they land in your inbox.) If you do not receive the survey after 2 weeks, please contact us at ws@itoshiro.org.
• Based on the participation survey, we will hold the workshop starting 12/1. Please prepare your sewing supplies, fabric, and pattern booklet before joining the session.
• We will host the workshop using Google Meet (no need to download the app). We will send you the joining link before the session starts, please access the meeting through that link.
• If you are unable to attend any session, we will send you a recording, but we encourage you to join all three sessions if possible to finish completing your Karusan.
• Depending on each participant’s skill level, some may not be able to complete the project.

【Preparations Before Making Your Pants】

Pre-wash your fabric. Submerge it in water, lightly spin it to remove excess moisture, then hang it to dry. Press it with a low-heat iron using a pressing cloth afterwards.
*If you want to machine wash your finished garment regularly, place it in a laundry bag and wash on a gentle cycle. Press out wrinkles afterwards. The fabric will shrink, but pre-washing before sewing will prevent you from worrying about shrinkage later on.

Based in Gifu City, Gifu Prefecture, they run the Minoui sewing workshop and garment making business at Ishitesshaku. They will guide you through the process while sharing tips for sewing smoothly and points for beautiful tailoring. They want everyone to experience the joy of creating and a peaceful, enjoyable time. Their motto is 'Praise and encourage growth!'

Required Sewing Skill Level

As a general guideline,
·You can make straight stitches by hand or with a sewing machine
· For hand sewing, you can make running stitches and blind stitches
· You have made small accessories or clothing by hand or with a sewing machine

then you are eligible to participate.

Rather than just following the pattern step-by-step,
we will explain the reasoning behind each shape and stitching technique as we go,
making this workshop perfect for people who want to move beyond their self-taught sewing skills.

This workshop will includea pre-selected fabric bundle delivered to youas part of the registration.

all vary significantly depending on the fabric you choose.

By experiencing the reasoning behind why each pattern shape pairs with specific fabrics,
we believe this will help you build better judgment when making your own clothing in the future.

For this reason, we cannot accept participants who bring their own fabric. Please note this in advance.

Can I learn effectively online?

We will deliver the exact same content as our in-person workshops at Ishitesshaku, even online.

We will prepare materials in advance, and on the day of the session, we will explain each step and our thought process while showing you our work up close.

What happens if I have to miss a session?

If you have to miss a session for unavoidable reasons, we will send you a recording of the session at a later date. We will make sure you can catch up on content from future sessions.

Can I join partway through the workshop?

We strongly recommend joining from the first session.

Each session builds on the previous one, so joining partway may make it difficult to follow along.

The registration fee includes

This is not a casual online course, it is designed as a **deep dive into clothing making**, covering everything from fabric selection to final tailoring.
