Traditional Japanese Indigo Dyeing

In Itoshiro, we cultivate indigo leaves, prepare the indigo dye, and dye throughout the summer.

During the indigo dyeing season, it feels as if we have adopted more children. This is because we need to constantly monitor and care for the indigo. Managing the indigo vats is a lot of work, but in return, they produce truly beautiful colors.

Historically, indigo-dyed clothing was worn for mountain work to ward off vipers and had insect-repelling properties, incorporating "beauty in utility" into daily life.

When the dye no longer produces color, it is eventually returned to the earth. We hope to continue this natural indigo dyeing tradition in this region for many years to come.
