Traditional Japanese Indigo Dyeing

In Itoshiro, we grow indigo leaves, prepare the indigo vat, and dye throughout the summer.

During the indigo dyeing season, it feels like our family has grown, because we need to constantly check on the indigo and take care of it. Managing the indigo vats is a lot of work, but in return, they produce beautiful colors.

In the past, indigo-dyed clothing was worn for mountain work to ward off venomous snakes, and its insect-repelling properties meant that indigo dyeing was incorporated into daily life as "the beauty of utility."

We hope to continue this natural indigo dyeing tradition in this land, returning the dye to the earth once it no longer produces color.
