About Echizen Shirt

The Echizen shirt is an adaptation of the traditional front-button shirt from Itoshiro, made more suitable for modern lifestyles.

Crafted with a straight cut derived from kimono construction, it uses fabric efficiently without constricting the body, making it versatile for everything from daily wear to casual outings.

Straight Cut and the Wisdom of Kimono

The Echizen shirt is made using the straight-cut technique, where fabric is cut and sewn in straight lines.
This construction minimizes fabric waste and creates a silhouette that naturally drapes regardless of body shape.

Additionally, because there are no fixed shoulder lines, it can be worn comfortably by people with sloping or broad shoulders.

Design Details
— Shirt Perfection

The front-button design makes it easy to wear as a light jacket, perfect for protection against air conditioning or as a light outer layer. The stand collar offers a neat, uncluttered look without feeling restrictive around the neck.

Triangular gussets under the arms provide ample room around the shoulders, enhancing ease of movement.
Thus, the design strikes a balance between the wisdom of traditional Japanese clothing and modern wearability.

Material: Domestic Linen

The material used is 100% linen, comfortable for spring and summer.

Shiga Prefecture has been a traditional hemp-producing region since ancient times. We source our linen from a weaving factory there that continues to produce fabric in ways suited to the modern era. The fabric is crafted with care and high skill. It is a very high-quality linen that is initially crisp but becomes softer with use.
With its smooth and refreshing feel and excellent breathability, it ensures comfort even in sweaty seasons.

Dyeing with Sakura Branches Broken by Snow

For dyeing, we use plant dyes made from wild plants collected in Itoshiro.
The sakura pink is dyed using cherry branches collected from the mountains that broke during heavy winter snow. This special plant dyeing process is only performed in years with heavy snowfall.

It's a wonderful experience for us dyers to see a soft pink, reminiscent of blossoms, emerge from what are essentially brown branches.

Each piece is carefully hand-dyed at the plant-dyeing workshop in Itoshiro.

Silhouette and Comfort

The Echizen shirt features a clean, short length and a well-balanced silhouette that pairs easily with various bottoms. The relaxed fit provides ample room, making it comfortable for any body type. It's a piece that feels light yet presents a refined look.

Size and Specifications

This time, it is available in two sizes: size 2 and size 3.

Size 2 (model 153cm wearing)

Size 3 looks lovely when worn with a loose, oversized fit. (＊This color is loquat, not sakura.)

Care Instructions

• Turn inside out, place in a net, and wash with a neutral detergent on a gentle cycle.
• Hang dry inside out in the shade.
• Plant-dyed items are sensitive to light, so store them in a dark place.
• Iron from the inside out at a medium to low temperature.
• If you want to completely remove wrinkles from linen, iron it when it is semi-dry for a neat finish.
• Repair and re-dyeing services are available. However, sakura dyeing is only possible in years with heavy snow, so the timing for re-dyeing is fluid. Indigo dyeing over it is possible [only in summer: May-August].
