"The place where 'Tatsuke' and Mingei intersect"
Kaori Hirano (Itoshiro Clothing Store) x Tomo Yoshizawa (Cultural Translator)
From the renewed interest in folk art and the work of Itoshiro Clothing Store,
What does the future hold for Japanese handicrafts and culture?
William Morris (1834 - 1896), who founded the Arts and Crafts movement and is also known as the father of design. The William Morris Gallery in London will hold a special exhibition called "Mingei / Art Without Heroes" from March to September 2024, showcasing clothes from Itoshiro Clothing Store. This is a conversation between Tomo Yoshizawa, who was involved in the exhibition as a translator/partner, and Kaori Hirano, owner of Itoshiro Clothing Store.
This program introduces how Mingei is perceived in Japan and the UK, and the differences between the two countries. Tomo Yoshizawa, a cultural translator who aims to build bridges between different cultures, explores the intersection between the ideas that still influence many makers and users of the Mingei movement and the craftsmanship of the Itoshiro Clothing Store, 100 years after it began.
