Make a "Sleeveless" Vest

This workshop is for people who fit the following description:

This online workshop is not for "beginners in sewing."

・You have made clothes by following sewing books or your own methods.
・You make clothes according to patterns but don't understand the reasons why.
・You always struggle with fabric selection.

This workshop is for those who want to understand fabric, construction, and tailoring while creating. Connecting online from your home, let's make a "sleeveless" vest that fits you perfectly. We will use our original black merino wool, which is not usually available for purchase as fabric. You can participate using either hand sewing or a sewing machine, whichever you prefer.

＊This time, you can choose to make either a short length (max 60cm length) or a long length (max 110cm length). (The photo shows the long length.)

Just one layer of this vest will keep your back warm during the cold season. Since it's cut straight, all sewing is straight. There are sizes 1 to 3 available. Please choose your preferred size. You can make it with either hand sewing or machine sewing.

Black Merino Wool

You will purchase black merino wool in its natural color (the sheep's original color), which is as soft as cashmere. Please choose either short or long length.

【Course Contents】

• 3 online workshop sessions (1/14, 21, 28, 13:00-15:00)
  
  • Session 1: Self-introductions, measurements, cutting, sewing
  • Session 2: Sewing
  • Session 3: Sewing, completion, Q&A
    
  • ＊Homework is expected. Please understand that you will be required to do homework at home after each session to catch up.
• Fabric (black merino wool 150cm wide)
  • Short length: 70cm, Long length: 120cm
  • ＊We will be using a slightly different cutting method than the "How to Make a Sleeveless Vest."

【Additional items required】

• How to Make a Sleeveless Vest (1st Edition): If you do not have it, please select "with instruction book." If you already have it, "without instruction book" is fine.

【Materials needed (please prepare yourself)】

• Sewing thread that matches the fabric (cotton or polyester is fine)

【Tools needed for creation】

• For both hand sewing/machine sewing: Sewing tools (fabric scissors, thread snips, measuring tape, tailor's chalk, straight pins (20 pcs), pincushion), iron, ironing board
• For hand sewing: Hand sewing needles
• For machine sewing: Sewing machine capable of straight stitching (lockstitch or zigzag function not required)

【Participation Process】

• After applying, we will send you a participation questionnaire via Google Form within two weeks. (It will be sent by email, so please make sure to adjust your spam settings to receive emails from info@itoshiro.org). If you do not receive it after two weeks, please contact info@itoshiro.org.
• Based on the participation questionnaire, the workshop will be held starting from January 14th. Please have your sewing tools, fabric, and instruction book ready when you participate.
• The workshop will be held using Google Meet (online meeting) (no app download is required). We will send you the participation URL before the workshop, so please join from there.
• If you are unable to participate in real-time, a recording will be sent to you.
• Please note that completion may not be achieved depending on the technical skill of the participants.

【Instructor: Hiromi Goto】

With many years of experience as a pattern maker, Hiromi Goto joined Itoshiro Yōhinten in April 2025. She is dedicated to conveying the wonder of straight-cut garments. She will guide you carefully and thoroughly with her high level of sewing expertise.

Regarding Sewing Skill Level

As a guideline,
・You can sew straight stitches by hand or with a machine.
・If hand sewing, you can do "running stitch" and "hemming stitch."
・You have experience making small items or clothes with a machine or by hand.

If you meet these criteria, you can participate.

This content is designed for those who want to take their sewing beyond simply following a pattern, by explaining
"why this shape" and "why this sewing method,"
allowing you to move beyond self-taught methods.

About Workshops with Fabric Included

This workshop will be held with a set of specified fabric delivered to you.

This is because
・ease of sewing
・the finished result
・ease of understanding the construction

can vary greatly depending on the fabric.

By experiencing "why this fabric for this shape,"
we believe it will lead to better judgment when you make clothes yourself in the future.

Therefore, we do not accept participation with your own fabric. Thank you for your understanding.

Can I really learn effectively online?

Online, we will convey the same content as the workshops held in Itoshiro.

We will provide materials in advance and, during the session, we will show our hands while explaining the process and concepts.

What happens if I miss a session?

If you are unavoidably absent, a recording will be sent to you later. We will make arrangements to help you catch up on subsequent content.

Can I join midway?

Generally, we recommend joining from the beginning.

Since the process is interconnected, it may be difficult to understand if you join midway.

About Participation Fees

The participation fee includes
・online lectures
・the fabric actually used

While it's not a casual online course, it's designed as a **"time to deeply learn clothing creation,"** from fabric selection to tailoring.

About Capacity and Application Deadline

・Capacity: 8-10 people per session
・Application Deadline: 12/31

Due to fabric arrangements and shipping preparations, the deadline cannot be extended further.
