Enjoy Itoshiro
Itoshiro is a Jomon settlement located further into Oku-Mino in Gifu Prefecture, on the border with Fukui Prefecture. This place, with its magnificent nature and unique lifestyle and culture, has long been protected by people as a village of mountain worship. In winter, two meters of snow falls, creating a world of silvery white, and in summer, it is a beautiful region rich in nature and water, visited by many people as a summer resort. When you come to Itoshiro, be sure to stop by some places where you can deeply experience the history of this land.
Hakusan Nakai Shrine
Located at the very back of the village, there is a shrine that has been protecting the area since the Jomon period. The grounds are filled with a sacred atmosphere, with numerous towering giant trees.
Jyoansugi (Japanese cedar)
It's about a 15-minute walk up the mountain from the grounds of Hakusan Nakai Shrine. There is a large cedar tree that is also mentioned in the folk tale "Joyasuwaha." Can you find the "white cedar tree"?
The 1800-year-old Itoshiro Oosugi cedar
This large cedar tree is located at the entrance to the hiking trail to Mt. Hakusan. It is said to be the starting point of the trail for Taicho Daishi, who founded Mt. Hakusan. It is a 30-minute drive from the village, and you can park your car and climb 420 steps to get there.
Nagabashiri Falls
Follow the footpath down to the relaxing pool below, where you can relax on the rocks beside the powerful waterfall.
