Japanese umbrella made of indigo-dyed washi paper dyed in Itoshiro

The Japanese paper dyed by indigo dyeing artisan Namiho Takaoka in Itoshiro last summer was finally made into a Japanese umbrella in January 2021.

Gifu City is a region famous for its washi paper and bamboo crafts, and CASA, a store specializing in Japanese umbrellas, is located in Kawaramachi along the Nagara River.

We have held exhibitions at Itoshiro Clothing Store in the past, and thanks to this connection, they have been making Japanese umbrellas using the store's indigo-dyed washi paper for several years.

The washi paper is tie-dyed in various patterns through trial and error, but whether it turns into a Japanese umbrella depends on the sense and skill of the craftsman.

Although we have seen dyed washi paper before, this is the first time we have seen the finished product, and we are thrilled and impressed!
